The city of Udaipur was established around 1567 AD. Also known as the 'City of Sunrise', it was the capital of the erstwhile kingdom of Mewar, one of the oldest surviving dynasties in the world. The Rajput rulers of Udaipur were the descendents of the Sun God and, therefore, the Golden Sun, which represents the Sun God, is still the royal insignia of the Maharana of Mewar.
The City Palace was built in 1567 AD over a hill on the banks of Lake Pichola. There are 4 big palaces and several minor palaces within the palace complex. The other buildings within the palace complex are the Rai Angan or the Royal Courtyard, Mor Chowk or the Peacock Courtyard. The entry is through a triple arched gate known as the Tripolia, built in 1725 AD.
The Jagdish Temple was built in 1651 AD by Maharana Jagat Singh I. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and has an imposing pagoda rising to a height of 79 ft and embellished with the sculptures of dancers, musicians, elephants and horsemen.
The Sajjan Garh, located on top of a hill and commanding a very good view of the Lake Pichola was built by Maharana Sajjan Singh to use it as an observatory. It is also called the Monsoon Palace.
Lake Pichola is a beautiful lake in Udaipur. It lies amidst the palaces, temples, bathing ghats and embankments. The Jag Niwas and Jag Mandir are the two island palaces situated in the lake, which are internationally renowned luxury hotels.
Maharana Sangram Singh built the garden Sahelion ki Bari for his daughter and the ladies of the Queen's court. He wanted to recreate the season of monsoon for his daughter, who had been ill for a long period and missed out the monsoon season. The garden features several fountains, which still work on the unique hydraulic system invented in 1700 AD. There are four pools also in the garden decorated with pavilions and elephants.
Ahar was the capital of Mewar before Chittor was founded in the 8th century AD. It was made the cremation ground for the Maharanas after the city of Udaipur was founded. Ahar is also a well-known archaeological site. The small museum at Ahar exhibits relics dating back to 3000 years.
